Got One!

By:  George Gordon

So after a long hard fought battle you finally landed a job.  You can now stop looking and relax right?  Actually the best thing you can do is start prepairing for your next career, move.  That next great job can very well be with your new employer.  Take time and reflect on the job search that you just went through and think about what worked and what didn't:

  • Why did you lose your last position?  Cutbacks, Move, Skills?
  • Did you want to take your career in a different direction but couldn't?
  • What skills etc. were employers looking for that you didn’t have that would have made you the ideal candidate.

Now is the time to take action for your next career move.  Take into account what you want from your career and start to persue those goals.  If it is training, skills, degree or professional certification that you lack, start looking into what it takes and start persuing it.  This will make you a better employee for your new employer and provide the potential for better compensation and advancement in your new organization.   Become invaluable and a contributor to the bottom line.  This will decrease the likelihood of another downsizing or right sizing sidetracking your career.

Go through all of the stuff you accumulated in your job search.  File those business cards.  Keep in contact with some of the good leads and recruiters.  If someone calls wanting you for an ideal position help them out.  Refer them to friends you have met through the BPE that may still be looking for their ideal job.  Or if they are looking for a specific skill set that may not be found currently at BPE, refer them to a local professional organization.  Have them check out our BPE Web site.  These recruiters will remember your willingness to help them find good candidates.  In the unlikely event that you again find your self in the market in the future,  they will be more inclined to put in the extra effort to help you.  There is nothing like networking.  Keep in touch.

Stay in contact with the BPE.  Pay the reasonable dues to remain an active alumni.  Help mentor others that are looking for a new position.  Contribute to BPE by writing articles, notifying BPE of job openings,  make job candidates and employers aware of BPE and its benefits.  Help your new employer find great candidates for positions they are seeking by recommending a BPE member.

The BPE exists to not only help out those seeking jobs but also ALL our member employers, recruiters and alumni.  Help make the BPE the best it can be.
